Last night, Chance became very ill. His regular vet suspects that he has developed cholangiohepatitis, meaning several of his internal organs have become acutely inflamed. This will require testing to confirm and treat, but this means admittance to an emergency veterinary hospital -- if you've had pets, you know this is expensive. While I'm chronically wary of asking for help, neither myself, my sister, nor our family has the resources to guarantee Chance gets the treatment he needs. Chance is a gem. He is a five-year-old who previously lived in a feral colony. Because of his warm temperament toward humans, the theory is that his previous owner dumped him there. Before getting rescued, he weathered at least one upstate NY winter solo; no small feat even if you have a roof over your head. When we met Chance, he'd been consistently overlooked at the shelter. His eyes were badly infected, he had superficial injuries, and he was in generally bad shape. Still, my sister Mackenzie was steadfast in selecting him from the 30 or so other cats at the rescue. Mackenzie named him Chance then and there, which elicited a "well, you're certainly taking a chance on him", from the shelter lady, which wasn't particularly helpful. I was worried, though, that taking Chance home would mean heartbreak sooner rather than later. My misgivings were unfounded. Under my sister's care, Chance was nursed back to full health, and he has gone on to live a very pampered and happy life in Buffalo these past few years. He is the sweetest cat I have ever met, and I am so glad Mackenzie was willing and able to give him the life he deserves. Chance's part two as a spoiled housecat has barely just begun. If you can spare anything to help him get the treatment he needs to continue his life as such, please give us a hand. Many thanks for your support. Any excess donations will be donated to a local animal charity.
