It is with immense regret to announce the unexpected and tragic passing of Matthew Scott Sathrum. Matt aka “Matty” age 32 passed into eternal rest was on Monday, July 10, 2024, in his hometown of Las Vegas, Nevada. Matt was born on Friday, January 4, 1991. Matt attended Derfelt Elementary, Johnson Middle School, and Bonanza High School. While at Bonanza, Matt played football and lacrosse all four years. From his freshman football team to his JV football team, to his Varsity football team, the Bonanza Football Program only fielded one playoff caliber team which occurred his senior year, yet he still excelled on the gridiron. He lettered in football and earned Defensive MVP every year. Matt was not only a defensive star; he also was a bruising fullback for the offense every year. Matty excelled most on the Bonanza Lacrosse team. Matty was the starting goalie for the Varsity lacrosse team all four years helping the team accomplish the “Three-Peat” by winning three state lacrosse championships from his sophomore to senior years while in goal. Matty won numerous lacrosse awards but the biggest award he took home was the NV Lacrosse Player of the Year Award his senior year. This award was an enormous accomplishment for him as it’s almost unheard of a goalie receiving this prestigious honor. Matt was not only a stellar athlete, but he was just as accomplished in the classroom as he was with football and lacrosse. Academically Matt ranked 36 out of 434 for Bonanza’s graduating class of 2009 while graduating with Honors. Matt had multiple scholarship offers from universities such as Arizona St, Baylor, Canisius, Chapman, Fontbonne, SMU, UNLV, and University of San Diego. Matty decided to take his colossal lacrosse talents and brain power to Chapman University which was his dream school. Matt played lacrosse his first three years at Chapman. While in goal his freshman year, Matty earned the Chapman Rookie of the Year Award. Matt graduated from Chapman University with a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training in 2013. Matt loved competing, as well as challenging himself academically, so he enrolled at UNLV for one year where once again he was the starting goalie for the lacrosse team during his short time at UNLV. Matt was determined to broaden his life academically which led him to attend PIMA Medical Institute. He graduated from PIMA with a degree of Occupational Associate - Physical Therapist Assistant in 2019. As Matt attended UNLV and PIMA, he worked for ATI as a Physical Therapy Tech, and later at Sante Fe race and sports book as a mutuel clerk. Upon graduation from PIMA, Matt would later work for Dignity/Select as a Physical Therapist Assistant. In his spare time, Matty loved playing lacrosse, and coaching the next generation of lacrosse stars in the Valley. Matt loved rooting for his LA Lakers and Kobe Bryant, the Dallas Cowboys, the Pittsburgh Pirates, and VGK. He enjoyed supporting UNLV athletics by attending the football and basketball games, he just loved competition. On many blistering days of 100 degrees or more, you would find Matt on the golf course enjoying another one of his hobbies. He loved to snowboard, play video games, play basketball, work out, watch the Simpsons and watch silly movies like Austin Powers where he knew all the dialogue. Matt loved all his animals that came into his life. Matt was a loving son, brother, uncle, cousin, grandson, nephew and friend that loved to compete with everyone, joke with everyone, and help anyone in need. He valued his family relationships, his work relationships, and his relationships he built with lifelong friends. His most valued relationship was with his Ma as he was affectionately known as a Mama’s boy, and he was proud of it. Matt lives on through his parents, Jeannie and Lamarr Mitchell, Scott and Cara Sathrum; his sister Brittany (Mat Tucker), sister Keelie Mitchell; nephew Grayson Tucker, and niece Juliet Tucker. Matt is preceded in death by his maternal grandfather Rod Kuiava, his uncle Tim Kuiava, DDS, and his paternal grandparents, John and Sandy Sathrum. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.palmsouthjones.com for the Sathrum and Mitchell families. https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/las-vegas-nv/matthew-sathrum-11371227
