We begin in a country manor in snowy Monaghan, 1871. We hear the sounds of a party inside suddenly turn to screams and yelling as two bodies on fire run from the house out into the snow. Then, in a dated civil service-type office Emily and Mary Wilde are seated across from their Death Officer, a motherly figure trying to get Mary to understand that she has died. Intoxicated Mary is still struggling through the grieving process. During this meeting, the Death Officer agrees to refer them to a much tougher type of treatment. The girls approach a reception desk pre heaven where they meet Diana, the receptionist, and sit in a waiting room with other people still processing their deaths from the other side. They are eventually brought into an office to meet with the Death Master to discuss their case. During this meeting, we learn that Emily has been offered to pass on many times previously but has always refused because she is unwilling to abandon Mary. The Guide brings them back to the night of their death and Emily and Mary witness their accident from afar. This prompts Mary to finally say what she's always wanted to say to her sister, which ends in an explosive, painful argument about their lives, beliefs, and deaths. Will the two sisters be able to move on?
