My name is Becky Yuan. Last year, I swam across Lake Erie to show my daughters and all girls to not be afraid to go after big dreams and goals. To tell them that nothing is impossible when you have the right attitude and proper planning. Hard work, perseverance and the belief in themselves is what will make them capable. I only started swimming October 2017. Since then, I have learned to swim, and can now call myself a marathon swimmer! That was all in support of Jumpstart Keeping Girls in Sports program. "Studies have repeatedly shown that girls drop out of sports at a much higher rate than boys". Last year, I raised $4850 for Jumpstart Charities, and Keeping Girls in Sports Program. THIS TIME! I have put together a relay team of individuals who are selfless, humble, incredible individuals with their own stories who believe in this message of Equity in Sports. Our swimmers are: Becky Yuan, Matthew Frazer, Ashley Amini, Amy Herskowitz, Camilla Dechichi, Maite Moreau, Michael Suppa, Mugiho Abe and Ruthie Sloan. Together, we are continuing the message that everyone deserves a chance to be on a team. To learn, to strive and go after their dream. This time, WE ARE DOING THIS OUR WAY. We are swimming as a relay team from Port Dalhousie to Oakville across Lake Ontario this summer to raise awareness for Equity in sports. Of course, a project like this requires funding. We are doing our part in raising money but we could also use some help to pay for the boats, equipment, and professional crew to help us get across the lake as safely as possible. Our goal is to raise awareness about gender equity in sports. We were initially going to sponsor 100 kids to programming at c3 , but due to circumstances beyond our control, we have pivoted to focusing raising awareness. We have a pilot project in the works, we have 2 workshops for educators coming up to work on how to engage and keep girls in sports. All this came from this relay project. Together we can help kids learn new skills, build confidence, and boost their self-esteem.
