I am a part of a group of 20 students at Loreto College St Stephen’s Green who will be travelling to Kolkata, India in February 2024. We are travelling to Kolkata to teach children in extremely disadvantaged schools such as Loreto St. Vincents in Thakurpukur and Loreto Sealdah. In order to make this journey happen, each student must raise money to cover the cost of participating in this programme. Included in this cost is €1000, which is donated directly to the Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre (KMWSC). The KMWSC is run by the Loreto Congregation of Sisters, as a centre for social change in India, and specifically West Bengal. It is rooted in Mary Ward’s values of freedom, truth, sincerity, joy and justice. These donations are vital for keeping the centre running and funding the various projects they undertake. The goals of the KMWSC are to reduce all forms of violence against women and girls, and to provide girls with an education. One of the KMWSC’s main projects is the Brick Field School Project. This focuses on educating children of migrant families working as labourers in brickfields by setting up temporary schools in the brickfields. Any donations for this worthy cause would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance for your generosity!
