I received my AA in December of 2024 in Liberal Arts and Sciences with Emphasis in Humanities before I transferred to CSUF where I majored in Dance. I graduated in May and was sent on scholarship by my school to New York to attend a week of the Martha Graham Intensive in June. Shout out to Natalie again. Once I got back to CA I joined my Dance Family in the 4th of July Parade. If you’ve seen me in the last couple of months and asked, “So Cara what’s next!?” I probably just stared at you or told you that I have yet to make a decision. The truth was I have been sitting on some very big decisions… I am going to proudly pat myself on the back publicly because I was accepted into my dream company training programs. After some long deliberation and many emails. I will be in Madison for half a season as an apprentice with Kanopy Dance Theater which is a Graham-based company, then after Christmas, I would like to move to New York to attend Jose Limon’s Launch portion of their program where I received a scholarship. What is an apprentice position in a dance company? Apprenticeships are unpaid (sometimes paid) internships where you get to dance and train with the performing company. What is a dance training program? It is a very selective program geared toward college grads. The dancers accepted into the program are allowed to take classes from the company’s directors, company members, and incoming guest artists. These training programs, give you contacts to further your dancing career, and you get the ability to say that you have been trained by a large company name like Jose Limon. I am raising money to attend Jose Limon’s Launch Program. My tuition with a scholarship is 3,500. I am raising another 1000 as a rent cushion for New York apartments. Thank you to everyone that has supported me thus far in my dance endeavors, especially my parents. I am very excited for this next chapter in my life. Before college, I did not know that New York was ever in the cards for me, and with the push of my professors and mentors who have kept in touch over the years, I am also grateful. If you would like to be part of the next step in my career, I would be eternally grateful if you would donate to my go fund me. photo by Rick Villarreal
