In April, our beautiful mother Gabriela Chaves was diagnosed with terminal cancer and given four months to live. With limited support at home and mounting responsibilities, we knew we had to find someone to help. Through a local Latino Facebook page I found an angel to help me, HHA, Ana Margarita Rivas. From the minute she walked in our home, we knew she was special. Her soft demeanor, willingness and ability to jump in and take control, lack of fear and confidence, gentle touch, compassion and love that poured out for my mother was the biggest blessing of our lives. For the next few months she was not only my mother’s rock but also there for our family. She held my mom and me while we cried together, she cared for our family and stood by our side until my mothers last breath. There is so much to say about this amazing and compassionate woman that I can’t find or fit into words. I only can say that I truly believe she was sent by God to help us. We learned a lot about each other in a very short time. She’s here alone with her two sons from Guatemala, recently graduated with her HHA certificate and is studying ESL. She is committed to her family and her own personal growth. She is a survivor, a warrior and our angel. As immigrants, my parents knew too well the struggles and opportunities that this country brings and how important it is to help each other. Born on May 22, 1935, in her beloved homeland of Manizales, Colombia, Gabriela, along with her husband Mauro Chaves, embarked on a journey to a new country in the 1960s. Their courage and determination paved the way for the rest of their family, who now thrive and flourish in this land they call home. In honor of our mother Gabriela Chaves who passed on July 13, 2024, we would appreciate your love and support for Ana and her family who are embarking on their own journey. Thank you and God bless you.
