Many of you have gotten to know Zeppe through my social media posts and some of you have been lucky enough to meet him in person. He is my longhaired miniature Dachshund and I love him sooooo much. Over the past couple of weeks, Zeppe began experiencing symptoms of the thing every Dachshund owner fears ... intervertebral disc disease (IVDD). This condition involves injury to the discs between the vertebrae of the spine and Dachshunds are particularly vulnerable to it. It can cause pain and paralysis in their limbs. I first noticed the onset when Zeppe stopped climbing his doggy stairs. Within a few days, his condition worsened to the point where he was losing control of his back legs. He then started having difficulty walking and would fall frequently as his condition continued to get worse. The whole thing happened very quickly and it broke my heart to see him suffering and in pain. I immediately took him to a veterinary neurologist, who specializes in treating IVDD. It was determined that the best chance for recovery would be through surgical intervention. So, I gave my sweet little Zeppe a big kiss and sent him into surgery hoping for the best. The surgery was completed and the Doctors are satisfied with the outcome, but only time will tell and the coming weeks will bring a lot of rest and rehab. The MRI, surgery and follow-up treatment are very expensive, and many people have asked how they can help, so I decided to set up this LFEBridge to help defray some of the costs of Zeppe's surgery. The actual costs are far greater than I am seeking here, but if you'd like to lend a little bit of help, Zeppe and I would be very grateful for the kindness. Every little bit helps. I will post updates on his condition as they develop.
