About Nua: Nua is a London based dance company committed to making dance more accessible and inclusive for audiences and artists alike. Nua Dance was created in 2015 by choreographer Neus Gil Cortes. Her unique physicality draws from dance, circus and visual arts to portray relatable, yet extraordinary people. Since 2024 the company specialises in immersive performances that offer enhanced accessibility options for Deaf audiences in collaboration with artist Ben Glover and partners Deaf Explorer, Audiovisability and Subpac. About NOISE: Developed in 2024, NOISE is a raw and intimate immersive performance for Deaf and hearing audiences. Audiences will take a sensory dive into different perceptions of noise inspired by the lived experiences of the performers as people who don’t conform to traditional stereotypes set up by ableism and heteronormativity. A visceral, trippy journey of self-discovery, NOISE embraces the complexities of our lives and celebrates the intensity of the physical experience. Featuring vibrating soundscapes and sound-reactive visuals to allow audiences to experience NOISE like never before. Acclaim for Noise: "Towards the end of the piece they all came together for a trio, although by the feeling of my Subpac, it was convinced it was a quartet. The audio was rousing and rib-rattling, urgent and harsh. Energy poured from body to body. And then – it stopped. I didn’t know what to expect but what I take away from NOISE is something I’ve rarely seen in dance before but hold very dear; an exploration of the varieties of ways we experience ‘noise’ as a concept, be it the intrusion of another on our private music-listening moments, or the strong vibrations of a Subpac or a dancing body, or even the loud projection of a clothing style… I found NOISE both highly enjoyable and highly accessible, and definitely a concept worth making some noise about." Bengi-Sue Sirin, Dance Art Journal, October 2024. Really, the whole event can be seen as a proof-of-concept: proof that blurring between dance and technology has captivating consequences; proof that art can be both thematically successful and innately inclusive; proof that the concept of ‘noise’ is far vaster than a viewer may initially imagine" Samuel Nicholls, A Younger Theatre. R&D sharing, December 2024. Why your support matters: NOISE is due to be performed at Liberty Festival this summer as part of Croydon’s year as the borough of culture. The festival is a rare opportunity for D/deaf and disabled audiences to feel genuinely welcomed in the theatre, as their needs are accounted for through enhanced, high-quality access options. NOISE uses the latest technology in sound-reactive visuals that are projected onto the space so the performance is truly immersive and accessible in all its content. We need to raise 3k to supplement additional funding already in place to cover the increased costs of using that technology to give the best experience to our diverse audiences. What your support will cover: Rental of 3 high-quality projectors as well as additional base speakers £1500 Insurance £400 Transport of the set, which includes screens and mirrors £100 Notch licence to generate the audio reactive content live £50 Video designer fee for adapting the content and setting up the projectors with project mapping £500 Specialised technicians required for the set up and running of the performance £450 Please support us by donating and helping spread the word to help make this work happen, allowing us to champion inclusive practices within the arts industry and ensure dance is for all.
