I've been coming to this village for over a decade. The first time I went, I knew this place was special. The people were so warm and welcoming, making you feel very accepted and welcome into their simple lives. I have been visiting twice a year since then and taking clothing donations for the kids and adults. They were so grateful and looked forward to it every year. I wanted to help them in a more lifelong way. There are not many opportunities here for a proper career to support an entire family. Job opportunities are very limited, typically corn farming or construction for around $7/day. My idea was to open a school to teach English! Learning English in such an impoverished country could present opportunities that these kids would otherwise not ever have. Since English is one of the most spoken languages in the world, it will allow them to work in tourism, go to university, and so much more. The local government has already approved our school and I have attained the necessary documents for a proper foundation. Now we just need to build! It will be a 15 x 15 school room where we can comfortably teach around 20 kids per class. We opened up registration and already have that number! The kids are very eager to learn which is the most exciting part! We are using a local builder who is really helping keep costs down. The breakdown of funds needed is $1,500 for the building materials and $1,300 for labor and hiring local workers.
