…if you educate a woman you educate a nation. - African Proverb In Tanzania only 2% of women enroll in college, this campaign is to help my friend Sophie, a young Tanzanian woman, beat the odds and complete her college education. Sophie is the oldest daughter of seven children in her family. Her parents are subsistence farmers in a small village in Manyara region of Tanzania. It has been her lifelong dream to become a safari guide – a bold goal in an extremely male dominated field. Sophie is intelligent, enterprising and incredibly hardworking, and she attained a scholarship to attend one of the premier wildlife colleges in Africa. Sophie is enrolled in a 3-year program in Wildlife Tourism at the College of African Wildlife Management, Mweka, Tanzania. One day, Sophie hopes run her own tour company specializing in safaris for women and also featuring socially responsible tours visiting NGO’s, craft collectives, and women owned microenterprises. Fall 2015: Sophie‘s dream of completing college and becoming a safari guide was abruptly halted when her sponsor could no longer fund her scholarship. With tuition, fees and program costs totaling over $4600 USD a year, and no system of financial aid in Tanzania, Sophie, who lives on less than $2 a day cannot afford to pay for college. Sympathetic to Sophie’s plight, the dean of students at Sophie’s college has extended the tuition payment deadline to January 15, 2016, and allowed her to attend classes this semester. However, if Sophie cannot pay for her tuition by January, she will be compelled to withdraw from college. There are 2 goals to this campaign:Goal 1 - to raise $4600 by January 2016 to make sure that Sophie can complete her second year of college.---FUNDING GOAL MET!***********************************************************Goal 2 - to raise an additional $4600 by September 2016 to fund Sophie’s third and final year of college. Please help Sophie achieve her dream of completing college and becoming one of the few female safari guides in Tanzania. Your contribution deeply impacts and improves the circumstances of Sophie’s life and the lives of those around her. Please share this campaign with others who believe in the profound power of education to transform a life, empower a woman and create a future of opportunity.
