Meet Shamick Otieno, my friend from Kenya who is hoping, with your help, to attend college at East Carolina University, this fall. He has been accepted and plans to pursue a double major in engineering and dance. He has obtained his visa and is preparing to start his college adventure in just a few short weeks. However, amidst the excitement he has encountered some unforeseen challenges with his international status, which has delayed his eligibility for certain scholarships. Due to these challenges, he is still in need of almost $19,000 before he can start school. Shamick has worked so hard to get to this point in his life. Shamick is originally from Kibera, a slum in Nairobi. He is one of six children from a single mother. A few years ago he was given the opportunity to live in the Artist's for Africa Boarding House to finish his schooling. Throughout his time at the boarding house, he has proven to be a young man of exceptional character, with thoughtfulness, empathy and remarkable problem-solving skills; he has been a rock of support for everyone, looking after younger boarders and always keeping things steady. For the last two summers, we have had the privilege of having Shamick live with us for a few months. We have grown to love and admire Shamick, with his infectious personality and his ability to thrive and adapt. We know he will be successful in college if given this opportunity. Please help me, help Shamick, be the first person in his family to attend and graduate from college. Any amount will help! All donations are tax deductible as Artist's for Africa is a recognized 501(c)3 charitable organization.
