This Go Fund Me is in support of my nephews, Ryan and Kevin Thompson. It is to help pay for funeral expenses for their father, my brother, David Klaus, who left us last week after being at BJC Hospital since May 30, most of this time having been spent in the intensive care unit. David is going to be laid to rest on Monday, August 7 at 1pm at Bellefountaine Cemetery, beside his beloved wife, Nila Thompson. David’s is going to be a green burial, as was Nila’s. These were his wishes. In May, David went to the hospital for radiating pain and was operated on, replacing his major aorta. He was getting better when he coded with his son Ryan in the room - so traumatic for him. They opened up his chest a total of 3 times. David lost oxygen and never woke up. He then had to go on dialysis for his liver and kidney (which never regained function). It affected his brain, his heart, his lungs. His blood pressure kept going low. They never got a good reading on his neurological function, and David was never able to move or respond to command. He had a stroke while in the hospital, got a staph infection, and a form of COVID. They took him off and on sedation. He was so, so sick, yet we remained hopeful. He was kept alive by machines. Lastly, the blood pressure medicine they put him on was not sustainable, and he suffered necrosis on his feet, hands, mouth and tongue that would have required surgery. He went through so much, but is now at peace. His sons that he leaves behind, Ryan and Kevin, are young adults who do not have the resources for their father’s funeral. Their family has never even owned a car and mostly have relied on public transportation to get around. Recently, a driver caused Ryan to have an accident where he flew over his handlebars and wrecked his bike. The driver never stopped. Kevin is on the spectrum and has special needs and again, their resources are limited. The reason I mention these things is because life has not been easy for their family. With Kevin’s disability, he is grieving and processing his father’s passing the best he can. He describes what he is going through as being in agony and feels that he and his brother are now orphans. I have let him know that my daughter Devon and I are there for them always and that they are not orphans. Ryan is only in his 20’s and he, Kevin, and David were very interdependent upon one another. The boys’ whole living situation is very likely to change soon, but remains up in the air. Anything you can do to help them is greatly appreciated. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.Sincerely, Karen Klaus
