In March 2024, I will be going on an environmental research trip to Peru to study endangered species in the Amazon. I have long been interested in genetics and biology, and going on this trip will provide opportunities for me to pursue my interests in these areas. In the long term, I hope to incorporate this learning into my future career in medicine. This trip is a research opportunity in which I will be contributing to the collection of data about forest resources in the Amazon. This data will be used to determine findings about sustainability and the impacts of climate change on the forest and the Indigenous peoples. On the trip, we will receive training in wildlife conservation and research methodologies. We will be surveying a variety of species including: Primates, large mammals and game birds, Macaws, wading birds, understory birds, dolphins, fish, caimans, bats, and amphibians. We will work in partnership with the Indigenous Cocama community and will be living on a riverboat on the Amazon River. To learn more about this trip, check out the video above. The cost of this 10-day trip is $4400 including airfare. Our school community is engaged in a variety of fundraising efforts to support this trip including events, fundraisers and grant writing. In addition to these efforts, I have been working at a part-time retail job to save money for the trip. I am also seeking individual donations. Anything you can offer would be much appreciated. I will be putting together a record of my trip with pictures and writing to share back with those who have supported me along the way. Thank you for your support and interest and please feel free to share this with anyone else who may be interested.
