Dear Friends of Matt, We all care deeply about Matt Wood and his art. My name is Jennifer Almquist and I am a friend and collector of his work. For five years I owned The Almquist Gallery in New Preston and am now a photojournalist living in Norfolk. I am writing to invite you to help our friend Matt with a significant project that requires our support. In 2024 he is having an exhibition of his work at The Mattatuck Museum along with a selected group of amazing like minded artists he chose. He expressed to me his desire to take time from his grinding work schedule to create a whole body of new artwork for the exhibit whose theme is our climate crisis. When Matt told me of this project and the challenge he faces in completing it, I offered to share his dream with you, his friends, his supporters, and collectors. In the ancient tradition of patronage- of the Medicis during the Florentine Renaissance that gave us the lyricism of Botticelli, of King Francis who lured Leonardo to Paris (the reason the Mona Lisa is in the Louvre), of Peggy Guggenheim whose support galvanized the modern art world with the likes of Frida Kahlo and Jackson Pollock, and of Sophie Dreier who championed Marcel Duchamp, you will be creating art history. My goal is to raise $10,000. to cover Matt’s living expenses for the six months of creating the art, the expenses incurred in framing, buying materials, etc. Please support Matt at a level that is comfortable for you and become a Friend of Matt. My family and I are proud to support Matt Wood. Seldom are we given a glimpse into the creative process of such a visionary, or the opportunity to help him realize his dream. We all know that Matt Wood is an important artist and that a museum show is a rare honor. In the words of British art collector Hussam Otaibi, “Art has given me so much. It has enabled me to expand as a human being, enriched how I relate to the world-and I want to give back- to participate in the collective conversation that is contemporary art.” I thank you in advance for your vision and generosity. I am sure the opening reception for Matt Wood at The Mattatuck Museum will be filled with admirers. Those of you who become patrons and Friends of Matt will share a rare sense of pride that you helped make this possible. With love and respect, Jennifer Jennifer Almquist
