EDIT:// Spelman has awarded me a $20,000 scholarship, however I still need some assistance covering the cost of attendance! Greetings! My name is Majesty Jerry, and I am a first-generation student from Philadelphia, PA. Currently, I am pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree at Spelman College, where I have chosen to major in Comparative Women's Studies and minor in Public Health, with a concentration in Women's Health. I'm reaching out for support during my senior year at Spelman College. Growing up in a single-parent household, my family is facing challenging times, and my financial situation has changed. My parent plus loan was not approved as well as independent loans I need to take out as I don’t have enough credit history. Despite my aspirations to attend Spelman College, a private institution, I was denied financial aid due to their limitations on assistance. The funds raised will be dedicated to covering my tuition expenses, which have increased since I enrolled in 2024. Although I've been fortunate to receive scholarships and grants, the total cost of attendance surpasses the amount I've been granted. Any assistance would make a tremendous difference in helping me pursue my education and achieve my goals. My passion for understanding the diverse experiences and challenges faced by women globally led me to Comparative Women's Studies. Simultaneously, I recognize the significance of Public Health in promoting the well-being of communities. I am particularly drawn to Women's Health, as I am committed to addressing the unique healthcare needs of women in marginalized communities. Looking ahead, I aspire to pursue a master's degree in Public Health to further equip myself in making a positive impact on underserved populations. My ultimate goal is to work towards creating better health outcomes and improving access to healthcare for marginalized communities. At Spelman College, I maintain a 3.5 GPA and I am actively engaged in various extracurricular activities that align with my values and aspirations. As a proud member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated, I am part of a supportive community dedicated to creating positive change. Furthermore, I serve as a SpelReads mentor, where I actively participate in initiatives that promote literacy and a love for learning among my peers. This role allows me to contribute to the academic growth and development of fellow students. Beyond the campus, I play a crucial role in empowering young women in the metro-Atlanta area through my involvement with "Gifted Girls of Grace." As a mentor, I am committed to guiding and inspiring these young individuals as they navigate their paths towards success. My dedication to promoting diversity and empowerment extends beyond my college years. In 2018, I cofounded the Minority Student Union at Renaissance Academy Charter School. In May of 2024, I initiated the first annual HBCU Day. This event celebrated the significance of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) for Black students. By featuring a diverse panel, including HBCU students from different backgrounds, we highlighted the unique opportunities these institutions offer for personal and academic growth. Actively engaging with my community is a vital aspect of my life. I have volunteered at local community food banks, contributing to the fight against hunger, and I have also dedicated time to mentoring young children in the inner city. By providing support and guidance, I hope to be a positive influence on their lives and help them achieve their dreams. As a first-generation student, completing my education requires significant support, and I am grateful for any assistance you can provide. With your help, I am confident that I can overcome any obstacles and successfully graduate from Spelman College, fulfilling my dreams and aspirations. Thank you for considering my journey, and I am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead!
