In March of 2024, we adopted the sweetest pair of bonded brothers - Luffy & Chopper, from the SF SPCA. They are so smart, adventurous, courageous, and loving - truly the best pair of kitties you could ask for. We are asking for your support with the sudden medical issues that Luffy has experienced. In a short amount of time, he's gone through a fight for his life. While we have pet insurance, our costs have far exceeded our annual limit, not even including various non-claimable expenses. But Luffy and Chopper are our babies. Our little family. And we have to do everything we can to support their health because it is the commitment we made when adopting these little furballs. About 3 weeks ago, our lovely 11-month-old kitty Luffy suddenly started having GI problems. He's struggled the last 3 weeks with incontinence and diarrhea - but was still the playful, fun, affectionate boy he always is. On the morning of August 2nd, 2024 his symptoms drastically changed. He hid from us all morning, refusing to come out from under the covers - and not in a playful way. Once we did get him out of the covers from breakfast, he was not interested in eating at all. This was so unusual since Luffy is typically an impatient boy for breakfast - pretty sure it's his fav meal of the day! Eventually, we encouraged him to eat some of his breakfast, but quickly after he ran to hide again. After about 15 minutes, we discovered that he had thrown up all his breakfast and defecated himself, tracking it throughout the house - poor baby! Immediately we rushed him to urgent care, where they x-rayed him. It showed that he may have an obstruction or partial obstruction (aka he may have eaten something he wasn't supposed to). They also found he had a fever. They recommended we take him to an emergency clinic that could monitor him overnight. So we did right away. He ended up staying overnight in an emergency, while the overnight crew ran many tests, gave him fluids to help him pass whatever it might be, and monitored him. On August 3rd, he got an ultrasound which showed a few things, and this is where we are at today: No obstruction. They are no longer worried that it's a blockage/item that will need to be surgically removed. However, they found blood clots in his urinary tract. They are sending a sample to the lab to be looked at in case he might have a UTI. His fever keeps fluctuating and they haven't gotten back the results of the Fever of Unknown Origins test. From my understanding, it could take up to a week for those results. At this point - given all the tests, they are worried he might have FIP, but we don't know yet. He's on antibiotics and is staying overnight again. This isn't our first medical issue with the boys since adopting them in March - but it's by far the most expensive, scary, and serious. It's amazing how these costs can add up so fast: Exam fees, Emergency/urgent care fees, sedation, fluids, antibiotics, specialized food, test after test to rule EVERYTHING out, x-rays, ultrasounds, and more. We've also had to take time off work - as Dylan is a freelancer, this has hit him pretty hard. Expenses have quickly piled up, forcing us to reach out to our support network for help. Luffy's bills will continue to grow - as there is still no solution. We want Luffy to come home and be with his brother who is missing him dearly. We will do whatever we can to make this happen. We are finding it hard to stay above water right now and could use all the help we can get to pay for these extraordinary medical bills. We are campaigning to raise money solely for Luffy's current medical issues, as they has been the biggest expense. Any amount will help. Seriously, anything will go a long way to ensure our baby gets the best care he can get. If you don't have the bandwidth to support with a donation, please share our campaign with your social circle. With our deepest love and greatest gratitude, Dylan, Sara, Chopper, & Luffy
