Hey there. I'm Emma. My partner, Blaine, and I are currently navigating a challenging time with our seven-year-old dog Kolohe. Last thursday bubs began showing distressing symptoms. He started walking with an unsteady gait, and was displaying signs of pain when touched or attempting to move. After consulting with both a vet and neurologist, we discovered he has severe degenerative joint disease in his hips and a spinal injury. Today, the neurologist confirmed that Kolohe likely ruptured a disk, possibly while playing or twisting in the wrong way. An MRI revealed a type 1 intervertebral disk herniation at T13-L1, causing compression on his spinal cord (ouch!). To give him the best chance at recovery, a laminectomy surgery is scheduled for tomorrow morning (Wednesday, July 12). The good news is that the prognosis for complete recovery is excellent with the surgery. The costs associated with the x-rays ($680), MRI ($4500), surgery ($7400), medications, and ongoing care are significant, and unfortunately we don’t have pet insurance to help cover the expense so we’re certainly feeling the weight of the financial burden in the midst of this. Any funds raised will go directly to paying off the cost of these unexpected medical expenses. If you’ve ever met Kolohe you know his greatest trick is making you feel like The Coolest Person In The World™️ when he greets you. He’s the oddest, silliest, weirdest, cutest little creature, and we feel honored every day to love him. We are comforted knowing that in a few months after this surgery he should be back to protecting the back yard from squirrels, showing off a toy to everyone who walks in the front door, and posing like he’s a painters muse. We know love for this puppybutt is contagious and we sincerely appreciate any contribution, kind words, or general healing hype you’re able to give for mr. kolo.
