When I went to the pet store to start thinking about adopting a cat I did not think that my first trip to the store would be the trip where I found the pet I would adopt. When I walked in and started meeting all the cats there was one cute little black cat that would not leave me alone. No matter where I went or what I was doing that little kitten was always right there, trying to talk to me, trying to play with me, trying to get pets from me. I hesitated for a moment and the good friend I was there with said, "You have to adopt him, he chose you," and I knew he was right and that I had to bring this little guy home with me. I adopted that little cat, named him Melville, and we have been together ever since. Throughout the years, I have known that he loved me and Simone unconditionally and would always try to make us feel better when we were sick or sad. Now that he is sick, Simone and I know that we must return that love and care to our sweet and handsome boy. Within the past year, Melville has developed a lump on his neck. Working with our fantastic veterinarian, we have been checking the lump and his bloodwork regularly to determine whether or not it was benign. Unfortunately, the mass has been growing and so we have begun the process of trying to get the mass removed surgically. We are doing everything we can to afford the costs of treatment but we need help. The initial estimate for the cost of treatment is $10,000, with $3,500 being for a CT scan that will help identify and locate the lump (what it's near, what it is, and how to remove it) and the remaining costs being the estimate for the surgery when he is deemed eligible for surgery. We believe that he will be a candidate because, while the mass has been growing, his bloodwork always looks good except for elevated calcium levels (an indicator of cancer). Donations to this fundraiser will go towards helping us to get the care Melville needs to live the long and happy life we know he will live after his treatment is complete. UPDATE 8/1/23: We have set up appointments for Melville at two local veterinary clinics and will be going to the clinic we can get to first.
