Hi, my name is Kai Heartlife. I am a 16-year-old junior in high school and I’m raising money to pay for the remaining tuition (after financial aid) for an amazing semester arts program in Napa, California. I really love making art and being creative, yet I have not had a formal or structured art class since elementary school. Over my time in lockdown, I focused a lot of my energy into art, especially 3-D and video work. At The Oxbow School I will be able to try mediums I’ve never tried before, and work in a structured environment to create art which I’ve never gotten to do. Over the course of my time at Oxbow, I will learn more about art, and how I can connect it with other topics at school and in my life, and hopefully build some amazing relationships. At the end of the program we get to do a final project in a medium of our choice and then have one final showing. Over the semester I will build a portfolio that is in line with many colleges’ MFA requirements for applications. My experience at Oxbow will hopefully prepare me for college and provide a lot of help with discovering where I want to go as I continue my education. I grew up doing performance art. I learned how to juggle as a toddler and have been performing in shows with my parents since I was four months old. In fifth grade I was introduced to slam poetry with Sparc Poetry. In high school I became involved with Youth Speaks, a poetry arts and education organization in San Francisco. In 2024 and 2024 I made it to the finals of the Youth Speaks teen poetry slam competition and in 2024 I joined the SPOKES youth advisory board. One thing that I would love to do in the near future would be to somehow combine poetry and visual arts. Growing my visual arts skills at Oxbow will help me fulfill that goal, and explore different ways to do it. The total tuition for the Oxbow school semester is $36,000. I received financial aid for $17,000. $7,000 is coming from the money I’ve earned over time from performance, video editing work, and from my family. I am fundraising to raise the remaining $12,000. Any donation over $25 will receive a special gift from me. I am producing a fundraising show in the SF Bay Area to continue working towards these goals, which of course you’re all invited to!
