Hello, my name is Jenna Douglass. I'm a History major in my sophomore year at Asheville-Buncombe Technical community college in Asheville, NC. This summer I have the opportunity to study abroad with my schools Study Abroad program, but not without help. The program consists of visiting AB-Tech’s sister schools. The first week is spent at Perth College UHI in Perth, Scotland. Where I will learn more about Scottish culture, music and arts. I will then travel north to Inverness College UHI in the Highlands to focus on Scottish history with outings to historical sites, as well as experiencing a homestay to allow for maximum cultural immersion. The money raised will pay for this amazing learning experience. I need at least half the price of the trip by the beginning of February so the trip leader can pay for airfare. Studying abroad in Scotland is a great opportunity for me to experience first-hand aspects of the culture I’m interested in. I love history! I find it stimulating and it inspires me to learn more. Some people tend to think history is boring, but there is so much we can learn about ourselves by studying the past. All it takes is the right teacher and what better teacher is there than the place itself. I’ve been to Scotland before, but I was on vacation with my family. When you’re on a trip like that, you don’t have the time and occasion to delve deeper into the history of the place you are visiting as you do on a study abroad trip. Given that British history is my field of interest, going on this trip would broaden my horizons, which is what studying in another country is about. I’m also excited about looking deeper into my family history. When I learned about the archive in Inverness, my curiosity was peaked. I’m also looking forward to experiencing a homestay as well. Exposure to how another culture lives is intriguing. All in all, I feel this trip would open up a whole new world to me, and would make the world at large more accessible. I would be beyond grateful for help in achieving my goal. Without help it would not be possible for me to go on this trip.
