I am raising money to help my daughter, Kristen, and her beautiful and beloved Herschel, a 2-year South African Boerboel. He is a 150 pounds of pure joy and a very special part of our family. Herschel has had a very difficult year and I am raising money to help with his extensive medical costs. In November 2024, Herschel tore his cruciate ligament in his left knee requiring surgery, which was performed on January 31st. Right from the start, he was showing signs of complications from the procedure. Though my daughter repeatedly raised her concerns to the vet, she was reassured that it was all just "a normal part of the healing process." Unfortunately, his symptoms were being misdiagnosed and he failed to receive the treatment he needed in a timely manner. As things progressed from bad to worse, she ultimately brought him to Blue Pearl Animal Emergency where it was determined that he had developed a terrible staph infection in his knee. Over the course of multiple emergency visits and difficult treatments, the amazing team of doctors and techs were able to get the infection under control, or so we thought. All of a sudden, Herschel wasn't able to bear weight on his leg again and it was determined that the infection had spread to his knee joint and he required another emergency surgery to remove all the hardware in his knee and to clean and flush out the area, which was done on May 16, 2024. Since then, Herschel has been on antibiotics to treat the terribly-stubborn infection. Sadly, on July 5th, the first day that he was finally allowed to play with his sister after several months of being separated, he tore the cruciate ligament in his right knee and needs yet another surgery, which is scheduled for August 30th. The multiple surgeries and emergency care costs have put a significant financial strain on the family, as she and her husband will have spent more than $21,000 after this next procedure, more than they can afford. I am asking for help to cover costs associated with Herschel's upcoming surgery and treatments to relieve my daughter of some of the financial and emotional stress she has been dealing with for quite some time now and help Herschel to finally return to being a young, strong, and healthy dog.
