Hello! My name is Sam Hallows and since I moved to Canadian Rockies a few years ago I’ve been exploring and researching grave sites throughout Jasper National Park where now-defunct fur trade posts and coal mining towns once flourished. I’ve been able to identify some names associated with these sites (two within the park boundaries contain many unknown graves); in addition, I’ve nominated the Pocahontas Mining Trail and nearby cemetery to the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada in an effort to recognize and preserve this aspect of our heritage. Throughout my time in the park, I discovered that many of these grave sites have unfortunately been neglected or forgotten over the years, and have embarked on a mission to tell the stories of those buried below. I am currently in the process of finishing my first draft of Trails and Epitaphs: The Forgotten Graves of Jasper National Park, and I have recently contacted the Jasper-Yellowhead Museum and Archives regarding photograph usage. The price per file is quite hefty ($30 CAD) and a number of them are required in order to properly illustrate these stories to my readers. I will also be seeking historical photographs and maps from other local archives in addition to designing modern maps which will also be included. Thank you everyone for your time in reading this, and big thank you to all who donate to this project!
