Hello! My name is Grace McCauley. I am a playwright who recently completed writing the script and music to my autobiographical musical, Letters to Home. I have written 11 original songs, which have since been arranged by my musical director, Billy Recce. At this point, we are planning to create demo tracks of the score and soon after hold a table read. I have created this LFEBridge to spread awareness about my work and raise money to support this step of the process. I’ve included a budget breakdown below as well as a synopsis and significance of the work. If you can, please donate and share! If you’d like to get in touch with me about my work directly, please feel free to do so! Show Description: Letters to Home is a musical that takes place during two time periods occurring simultaneously for the main character, Grace, at different points of her life. We are introduced to Adult Grace and her therapist, Valerie Stint, who sit together in a white padded room in a mental hospital, and Young Grace who sits in her childhood bedroom ten years earlier writing letters to her future self to cope with her alcoholic mother, Theresa. By the second part of the show, Adult Grace faces her trauma by entering her past. There she must decide whether to continue carrying the identity of her mother’s choices or move forward with her life by confronting her inner child. Significance: Growing up, my house was a kaleidoscope of colors, smelling consistently of wet paint, marlboros cigarettes, and vodka. My parents were as lost as they were brilliant and when I was 11 years old, we became homeless. Until this point, I would write letters to my future self. Fully believing that magic existed, I would leave the letters face-open every night, hoping to receive a response by the morning. As an adult, I am moved that during my darkest, most uncertain and vulnerable moments, the person I sought relief and guidance from was myself. After eventually being placed in the New York City foster care system, I continued to rely on art as a form of truth telling to survive. Letters to Home is a project of deep personal significance that I hope can shed light on the power of home we all have within us. Budget: Vocalists: $850 Studio Time: $500 Music Direction: $330 Production: $550 TOTAL: $2,500 (including a wiggle room for studio time. Any unused money will be kept in a bank account dedicated to Letters to Home)
