Picture it. You have fallen asleep on the couch. You were watching a little television before bed, reruns of an old sitcom. But now, the programming is over. The hour of the infomercial has arrived. You are slowly drifting in and out of sleep when it happens. Sarah McLachlan's voice quietly emanating from the screen... "In the arms of the angel/ Fly away from here..." Furry faces peer through chainlink fences, begging for a chance at life... When my sister, Beth, met Dixie, she too was begging for a chance. Dixie was exhibiting clear signs of neglect and abuse. From her stunted size, the acid burn marks along her sides, and the build-up of puss and infection in her eyes, it was evident that something needed to be done. When the owner mentioned putting her down instead of seeking the medical care she needed, Beth offered to take her in. They thankfully complied, but now Beth and Dixie need a little bit of help. Getting Dixie the care she needs is not cheap, and it was definitely not a planned expense. In addition to issues as a result of abuse, Dixie is also a bit of a genetic disaster. Poorly bred bulldogs suffer from a slew of issues, and Dixie is experiencing almost every single one. To quote the vet the day they met Dixie, "This puppy has major issues!" These include the following: -Chronic Dry Eye (causing constant infection and scaring of her cornea) -Eyelid Entropion (an eyelid abnormality that is actively scratching her cornea and creating additional scaring, costing her her vision) -Chronic bladder infections -Severe allergies and skin irritation -Difficulty breathing The priority right now is to get Dixie surgery to correct the Eyelid Entropion. The sooner this surgery is completed, the better chance she has of retaining some of her vision. This project will fund her medications to prep for the surgery, the surgery itself, and her aftercare (including the eye care and allergy medications that she will likely need for the rest of her life). Any and all support is appreciated, as we try to save Dixie's sight and give her a new lease on life. She is under three years old, loves to cuddle and play, and more than deserves many happy years where she is healthy and loved.
