Space City Harm Reduction is a small, nascent harm reduction project based in Houston, Texas. We are dedicated to offering testing, safer use+safer sex supplies, medical supplies, and other relevant resources, always free of cost, to people who use drugs and those on HRT in the Houston metropolitan area. We are not a religious group and do not require or pressure users into recovery/sobriety (and support those who do want it.) We believe in the inherent dignity and worth of every person who uses stigmatized drugs and every person struggling with addiction. Our mission is to reduce preventable drug-related infections, illnesses, injury and deaths in our community through education and mobile distribution/delivery of supplies. Every year in Harris County, there are hundreds of fatal overdoses, hundreds of newly diagnosed cases of HIV, of Hep C- all preventable. We have also begun a syringe services program (needle exchange) designed specifically to meet the needs of transgender (incl. genderqueer, nonbinary, Two Spirit and other gender diverse people) who inject HRT, perhaps the first of its kind in Texas. We are working hard to develop a solid funding model that will allow us to not have to depend upon donations to operate and expand what we offer. We are getting there, but we are not incorporated as a nonprofit and it will take time to be able to benefit from grants. So, everything is being paid for out of pocket. We're happy to do it, but we're not rich and it's admittedly slowing us down. SCHR just needs a boost to get fully off the ground and allow us to better meet the needs of our community during this time of growing pains. We are planning to begin distribution of much-needed safer use and overdose reversal kits to marginalized, especially unhoused, people in under-served areas of Houston in late summer. There are large swaths of HTX that are not reached by other harm reduction organizations and need improved access to resources. We're well-stocked on the basics for the trans needle exchange, which will continue regardless of the results of this fundraiser, and on what we need for safer smoking kits. However, currently we have limited funds for medical supplies and other operational costs, like printing signage and instructions for proper use of supplies. For a few months we'll be low/short on a few very important items- like more fentanyl test strips, naloxone (Narcan), CPR face shields, saline, and personal care items. We want to be able to be fully active in the heat of summer, when the unhoused in Houston are incredibly vulnerable, and to be able to make our safer injection kits as comprehensive and inclusive as possible. We would greatly appreciate any help you would be able to offer- not as charity but as mutual aid. Every cent will be accounted for, receipts kept and posted for the sake of transparency. Please contact us with any questions, concerns or suggestions. Thank you.
