SAILING SCHOOL OPENING IN SHEDIAC THIS SUMMER, BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP Who We Are: The Greater Shediac Sailing School (GSSS) is a new youth sailing program operating out of Pointe-du-Chêne Wharf. We are offering the CANSail program starting with CANSail 1 for beginners through to CANSail 6. Sailing instruction has a rich history in the region, dating back to the 1950’s. Generations of families have been taught to sail in Shediac Bay. Our goal is to continue this history of instruction started at the Shediac Bay Yacht Club and promote the many benefits of sailing such as physical fitness, an appreciation of nature and our environment, teamwork and the science of aeronautics, hydrodynamics and meteorology. Sailing also teaches kids independence and grit as students sometimes need to harness the wind to get ashore. Most importantly it is fun and lifelong friendships are made! A group of parents and committed community members who want to take sailing instruction on a new path on Shediac Bay has put the GSSS together. The newly formed board is made up of former instructors, coaches, racers, cruisers and others who want to keep developing lifelong sailors for years to come. We Need Your Support: We have had to put the GSSS together quickly. We learned the Shediac Bay Yacht Club (SBYC) would no longer operate a sailing school in March, less than four months ago. Since then, we’ve had to secure a new location, finalize a business plan and budget, incorporate as a not-for-profit, hire instructors, and source equipment. We have just received the fleet from SBYC, but it is an aging collection of boats (especially the coach boats), some of which are more than 30 years old. All of these factors have created challenges. The boats will need repairs and some will have to be replaced. We are purchasing a newer fleet of O’pen Skiffs. These are training boats designed for youth. We need cradles and dollies for the fleet. Our goal is to eventually have a small building on the wharf for the GSSS to be used as an office. We are asking for your financial support to help us with the purchase of boats, equipment and the general infrastructure needed to operate the sailing school. Our Goal: Our goal is to fundraise $20,000 to help us develop our program and the infrastructure needed to operate a new and improved sailing school that will be accessible to youth in the region. We welcome donations of any size. Every little bit helps and we appreciate the community’s support. We cannot forget the impact our sailing school has on our youth in Shediac. Our program builds confidence, leadership, problem-solving skills, and overall self-development via a unique on-water experience that will be remembered for a lifetime.
