My name is Shanel & I’m starting this fundraiser on behalf of my late Sister, Bethany. She died yesterday after a short but devastatingly consuming bout with ovarian cancer. She was only 40 years old & was diagnosed 2 days before Thanksgiving of this past year (‘22). She’s one of three daughters (she was the Middle Sister) & though we were all born & raised in Chicago, her last couple years of life was spent in Massachusetts with her fiancé who stayed by her side through every treatment, every struggle, every setback as she sought therapy at Dana Farber. I moved to Massachusetts shortly after her diagnosis to help her fight this monster… She had no life insurance & now, in the midst of our abyss of grief, we face the heartbreaking task of trying to raise money for her to be transported to Chicago so that she can have her funeral at home. In addition to this financial mountain we now must climb, she also leaves behind her 3 children; a daughter (22, she died on her daughter’s birthday -(07/15/23) & her 2 sons (14, 8). Her dying wish was that I look after her children, particularly that I would take & raise my two nephews. They don’t even have casual dress clothes let alone a suit to wear to their Mother’s funeral & yet, as we approach a new school year for them (more expenses I’m nowhere near prepared to handle) they must pack up their lives & relocate to Chicago to live with me in a two bedroom/1 bath home with my fiancé, my own daughter, a dog & a cat. But before this can even happen, WE (me, my daughter & her 3 children & my own vehicle) all have to get back to Chicago as well & this task will require funding for a one-way rental of a U-haul, gas for this truck & my car as well as packing expenses -we are not financially prepared for this extreme transition at all. Lastly, that fiancé I told you about; though he IS employed (bus driver), he lived with my Sister who was a Public Housing tenant; this means that come next month, he’ll not only have lost his entire family (my sister to cancer, the kids to relocation), but he’ll be homeless as well as the housing authority will require him to move. I chose the goal amount of 8,888 because in Pythagorean numerology the number 8 represents VICTORY, PROSPERITY and OVERCOMING. Most importantly, 8 is the infinity symbol sideways, infinity to me represents God & what we need right now is a miracle if we’re going to have payment for everything in time for the funeral were shooting to have by next weekend. With everything I’ve told you, we need so much more than we’re asking but our main focus is getting my Sister home & the funeral she deserves, one that her babies will be proud that she was able to receive as their final memory of her.
