Hi, my name is Carmen. I am a high school math teacher in upper Manhattan. I have accepted a new role at a different high school starting this fall. When I left my old school, I only took with me supplies that I bought myself and left the rest in my old school. Turning a blank room into a beautiful and inviting classroom for students requires a lot of resources and planning. The $250 that the DOE gives teachers is not enough for teachers to design their ideal classroom. That barely covers dry-erase markers, grading pens, and stickers for grading papers. I know I am lucky that my new school will provide many of the ongoing basic supplies and more, but one thing I learned over the years of teaching is that I am a better teacher when my classroom layout, design and resources are configured for my teaching style and my students. I had to leave many things behind at my old school and I want to recreate an even better classroom experience for my new students at my new school. Like most kids, my students spend more time in school than in their own homes. Please help me do my part in creating a wonderful classroom where they will feel empowered to learn and push themselves to be the best scholars that they can be.
