Hi, my name is Mary Mathieu & I am fundraising for my rescue dog, Dakota’s, mass removal surgery. Dakota is my lifeline as a trauma, abuse, & multiple suicide attempt survivor. He is my emotional support animal who lives with me on my college campus & has saved my life in ways nothing else has been able to. Without him, I cannot function. Finding out this news has crushed me in more ways than I can currently handle. This summer, after being at risk of homelessness, I made a promise to myself to create a better life for Dakota and I. I worked hard all summer and got to a better place in life and then all of a sudden I noticed not one but two lumps on Dakota. The surgery to remove and test these lumps is more than I can currently afford. Any help given is greatly appreciated as I cannot lose my everything. Without him, I do not know how to carry on. We need your help. Update: Dakota received a needle aspiration/cytology test on August 10th at his new vet where we received a second opinion. Enough cells were collected for the mass on his front leg and due to the way they were dividing when examined under the microscope by the veterinarian, her professional opinion was a mast cell cancer diagnosis. The other mass did not have enough cells collected, but mass cell tumors are known to spread rapidly. He will need both masses removed at a specialized vet due to their locations. We were given a list of five different options and have called them all this morning. The total cost of surgery we need to continue fundraising for will be reflected here once we find out more. Thank you all for your continued support, love, and prayers. We appreciate you greatly during this difficult time. Update Update: Today, August 16th, Dakota had his initial surgery examination at MedVet Chicago, the specialty hospital our regular veterinarian recommended to perform the surgery. The total cost of his treatment is now $5,200. Our current treatment plan includes chest radiographs, pre-op bloodwork, IV catheter/fluids, anesthesia, surgical supplies, operating room time, histopathology x2, hospitalization for the day, and medications to go home. After about a week post-surgery, the pathology results will be in determining whether Dakota will need further treatment with chemo depending on the tumor grades. There are no payment plans available and CareCredit is not an option due to me not having enough credit built up as I am only a college student. Despite working all summer, even my savings are not enough to cover this surgery. Currently, we have him scheduled for an all-day surgery on Tuesday, August 22nd. However, we may need to postpone if we do not raise enough funds in time. Postponing means risking cancer spreading faster. Please help us get the word out! We appreciate you all and your love during this difficult time.
