Club Bocas Chess is an official Panamanian non-profit sports organization, endorsed by PanDeportes and led by people dedicated to give local children the best opportunities possible and therefore depends on donations and volunteers. This effort is designed to ensure the program's long-term viability and maintain consistent time commitment. Bocas Del Toro is an archipelago comprising 9 main islands off Panama's northern Caribbean coast. While renowned for its excellent surfing spots and stunning Caribbean beaches, the region also faces unique educational challenges. Our mission is to enhance educational opportunities in Bocas Del Toro through chess education. We aim to empower students, nurture their potential, and contribute to the bright future of the Bocas del Toro community. By introducing chess as an educational tool, we seek to develop critical thinking skills, improve academic performance, and inspire a passion for learning among local students. Our goal is to support the youth of Bocas Del Toro in pursuing their aspirations and contributing to the growth and development of their community. Here at Bocas Chess, we believe that chess is an educational tool that can transform not just individual students’ lives, but also the future of an entire community. Bocas Chess Club looks to support talented students as they start competing in chess and providing technological resources, e-books, online learning and professional coaching to enhance chess education. These workshops are primarily held in four local schools: Multicultural Dr. Andres Culiolis Bayard, Tangerine International School (after class), Colegio Rogelio Ibarra (on Wednesdays), and Escuela Carenero (on Sundays). While some children and students have the means to participate in our programs, others face financial constraints. Our goal is to provide equal opportunities, ensuring that all deserving participants can benefit from our initiatives, regardless of their economic background. In February 2024, our newly federated chess club made its debut sending 19 young players to The Youth National Chess Tournament. This event provided valuable exposure to competitive play and official chess regulations. Given our island location, participation in national events is costly, with transportation and meals alone exceeding $140 per person. Additionally, we need to factor in the expenses of chess equipment: sets and timers cost are +/-$30 each and cost of remote school visits are +/- $150 per trip, looking to equip schools and to prepare for future school tournaments. We plan to wisely invest +/- $1,000 in technology items for chess workshops and encourage discipline while advocating for controlled screen time dedicated to educational purposes. We believe in our youth and guide them in using these resources to play and learn effectively. Bocas Chess provides several free workshops and low cost training for students, promoting social awareness in public schools throughout the archipelago, along with online lessons. We invite you to join our project as volunteers or sponsors, helping to promote this game, which is a blend of sport, art, and science. Just as chess sharpens the mind, music enriches the soul. Our workshops blend these disciplines, teaching students the art of focus, pattern recognition, and creative expression. Your donation may also help us bring the beauty of both chess and music in Carenero and Bastimentos —support us in nurturing well-rounded, inspired minds. In August 2024, RIO and KAI volunteered their time and have continued to support our mission through this fundraiser, helping to make a positive impact on Bocas Chess children's education.
