Nicholas’ sweet 3-year-old cat Emma Jean was hospitalized after developing acute kidney damage from still unknown causes. While hospitalized she went into congestive heart failure. The vets are cautiously optimistic, and think it’s possible she can recover after a few more days in the hospital. We're raising money to help Nicholas cover the vet bills for the treatments that are keeping EJ alive. EJ first went to her usual vet, where they assessed her and performed x-rays. This cost $612. This vet sent them to an emergency vet clinic. The clinic kept EJ overnight and gave her fluids and oxygen, performed blood tests and urinalysis, and took x-rays and an ultrasound. This total came to $3,076.42. Unfortunately, they discovered that EJ also had fluid in her lungs and an enlarged heart (dilated cardiomyopathy). This vet does not have the equipment to diagnose the cause of the heart condition, so she was sent to a third veterinary hospital that has a cardiologist. The cost of the specialist care at the second ER is $4418 upfront with an estimated total cost of $8837. This brings the overall cost of her care to $13,000 including take-home medications. EJ's condition is delicate, and she's not yet in the clear. The treatment that would help her kidneys seemed to be making her heart condition worse – her kidneys would be treated with fluids, but her heart needs a diuretic. But she's fighting hard, and the new doctors are hopeful. Since arriving at the second hospital, she’s made some serious improvements, and things are looking up. We love EJ and we want her home and better ASAP. Nicholas is a PhD student, is financially self-sustaining, and as such is unable to foot these costs alone. This is a massive bill, but any amount you can give helps. If you can't donate right now, you can still help by sharing this on social media. Anything and everything for this special girl is hugely appreciated <333
