On Monday, July 17th 2024 our two year old Border Collie, Jasper was struck by a vehicle heading north on 240th. The driver that hit Jasper had fled the scene, leaving him on the road to succumb to his injuries. A good samaritan saw him laying in the road and acted quickly to take him to the nearest animal hospital. At 2:00pm we were notified that Jasper was in the care of Albion Animal Hospital and that he had sustained life threatening injuries that would require immediate attention. X-Rays and Radiograms determined that he had suffered a traumatic pneumothorax (air escaping the lungs and filling the chest cavity) and a laceration to his left foreleg. It was decided the best course of action was to stabilize Jasper and transfer him to the Animal Emergency Clinic of the Fraser Valley in Langley. Dr. Elder immediately took Jasper into his care and performed an emergency thoracocentesis (chest tap) to relieve the accumulated air from his chest. Jasper spent the night inside an oxygen chamber to assist his breathing with hopes that his lungs would begin to close and no more air would would accumulate outside of the lungs. At 2:00am on July 18th, a second thoracocentesis was performed. A total of 1.1L or air and fluid was removed from his chest cavity. Later in the morning it was determined that he was able to begin breathing on his own and continued to recover outside of the oxygen chamber. With advice from the team at AECFV Jasper was discharged at 5:00pm on July 18th, as the environment was too stressful for him to calm his breathing and recover any further. He is now resting at home and requires 24hr monitoring with medications to ease his pain and prevent any infection along with follow up appointments to ensure proper recovery. 100% of any funds raised will be directly used to pay for these accumulating vet bills. Jasper is a fighter with a long life ahead of him and is looking forward to getting back to his normal active lifestyle. Sincerely, Carson and Mikayla. UPDATE JULY 22nd Jasper has been back to the vet for checkups this week and has shown great progress in his recovery. We want to thank everyone so much for all the love and support we have received this week. Jasper is in good spirits and can’t wait to get back to playing with his big brother Flash! UPDATE JULY 27 Jasper had developed an infected wound over his left thorax after the removal of his fentanyl patch July 22. July 25 he visited his local animal hospital in Maple Ridge to check on the infected area, we were sent on our way with antibiotics and told to monitor the area. During payment the infected area “burst” leaving a hole/tear on his left thorax. We decided to take him back to AECFV to receive the best care. It was decided as a family to sedate Jasper and complete surgery. During this surgery he had his wound flushed, cleaned, debrided (removal of damaged tissue) and closed. He also had a drain placed to help clear the infection. He requires to be on bed rest again, even though Flash is ready to play. He will require follow up appointments to remove the drain and sutures. Jasper can’t wait to be back to his adventurous and wild self!    Thank you to everyone who has donated! It’s truly amazing to see all the love and support in our community. - Carson, Mikayla, Flash & of course Jasper.
