Hi, my name is Sarah and I am a cat mom to Serena and Lionel. I am a social worker and advocate for human rights. Today my partner Zach and I are asking for help covering the emergency costs for our little kitty Serena, aka Teenie Serenie, Teenie Bop, Boppy, and Ms Bop. I’m currently unemployed and have been trying to find a job since early June, making the funds that Zach and I have to put towards this much more limited on just one salary. We adopted Serena in December 2024 from the Nevada SPCA, a little over 3 months after we unexpectedly lost our sweet cat Mariah. We are still quite heartbroken over losing Mariah and would be devastated to lose Serena so soon too. We wanted to adopt an adult cat since Mariah never got to grow old. We hoped in Mariah's honor we could help another kitty to grow old. We also wanted Lionel to continue to have the company of a fellow cat. I walked into the room Serena was in and immediately knew we had to take her home. So we did. Upon coming home with us you could tell how relieved she was to be rescued, to have a loving family and lots of attention. We loved each other immediately. Since December, she has continued to warm up at home, and while she isn't a bonafide lapcat (yet), she every once in a while will jump into my lap and more frequently will meow for me to pick her up and hold her. One day we woke up to Serena not being herself. She didn’t get up to greet us when we entered the room like she always does. And when she finally did, her balance was really off. She was wobbly. We called the vet immediately and took her that same day. Fast forward to this weekend: despite spending nearly a week in the vet's care, including 5 days on antibiotics, Serena is having pretty serious vestibular issues - she can barely walk without falling over. She is barely eating and is not doing her regular grooming. She really is feeling unwell. Our vet recommended we take her to the ER to stabilize her, and get her medicine to protect her brain. She needs emergency stabilization, an MRI, and surgery. The estimated cost for emergency care and an MRI is $6,000 - $7,000. We are still waiting for an estimate on surgery. We expect the cost to at least double. I’m currently unemployed and have been trying to find a job since early June, making the funds that Zach and I have to put towards this much more limited on just one salary. Most people who know me know I love animals tremendously and know I believe in community support. I have contributed to saving many animals in my life, via donating money, helping to raise money, and actual first-hand rescue. Because my advocacy work is mostly in the human realm, I regularly contribute to animal advocacy via monetary donations. I know the power that even $5 can contribute to saving an animal’s life if many people pitch in to do so. All of my regular donations go to animal sanctuaries and in-process emergency animal rescues, weekly and monthly. For example, I donate regularly to Angels for Mistreated Animals (AMA Animal Rescue), NYC Second Chance Rescue, Animals Lebanon, Mino Valley Sanctuary, Lancaster Animal Sanctuary, and others. We would deeply appreciate it if you would consider donating even $5 towards Serena’s care to help us ensure she can continue to live out her life with us. Or skipping your coffee once this week and putting the pocketed cash towards this. In this world, I know we are all trying to get by and countless causes need support- so if you can’t donate but could share in a group chat with friends or family, and ask them to send $5 we would be so grateful. Anything truly helps us figure this out. Thank you so so much <3
