I have had the privilege of becoming friends with a family from Afghanistan. The family of nine fled Afghanistan when the Taliban took over. After 3 months of a treacherous journey, carrying only what they had in their backpacks, they resettled in the Bay Area. They had to leave their successful careers in Afghanistan since the men's lives were at risk due to work with the US military, Afghan government, and refugee resettlement agencies. The women were also at risk due to their medical education. Since settling in the Bay Area, the oldest son diligently and successfully applied for refugee for his whole family (by himself, without the help of expensive attorneys). He recently received his social security number and is allowed to work! Part of the money raised from this campaign so far has gone to English classes and books at Chabot college for 7 adults. Though we have money left from that campaign, it is not enough to help with two civil engineering courses and certificates which will allow two of the sons to find a job in their trained field (total cost for both sons is $2500). Once they obtain these certificates, they have a friend that can help them find a job. The daughters also hope to take college classes to help them pursue their medical careers in the US but are not eligible for financial aid yet since they have not had their refugee applications processed yet. With the help of churches and individuals in our community, this family has come so far in the past year. They are almost ready to be self-sufficient, but need these courses in order to be able to pursue work in their area of training. Please consider donating. Thank you! Eiri Inenaga, Portola Valley Classes they will be initial taking are the following.
