My name is Kayla Paquette and I am the proud, loving mother of my precious fur baby, Goose. I first met Goose at three(3) months old when the Ottawa Humane Society came to my workplace to home cats that were up for adoption. Goose came in with his brother Maverick, my other precious fur baby - whom everyone instantly fell involve with, including myself. There was something very special about Goose too, and I could not bring myself to leave a brother behind, so that day Goose, Maverick and I started our family. Over the years, Goose and Maverick have had routine vet visits, and have always been in great health. We have had some scares with Maverick having a blocked bladder due to urinary crystals, and Goose having bladder inflammation, which have been triggered from anxiety. Fortunately, my boys were able to be treated, put on a strict urinary vet prescription diet, and utilize the benefits of Feliway Feline Diffusers to help, reduce and calm sign of stress. Although Goose and Maverick have had to deal with being anxious little boys, they have both grown into strong, beautiful and adventurous cats. Goose is now six and a half (6.5) years old, and king of the house; however, his health took an unexpected and drastic turn. My once playful, vocal, spunky, sweet and sometimes full of attitude boy, was suddenly not himself. We went to the vet out of concern, in hopes of treating for stress/anxiety with possible crystals as we had before. After proceeding with full blood tests, urine tests, x-ray, ultrasounds, etc., I was told that Goose was in stage three kidney failure. My vet was just as shocked as I was. What I learned that day, was that kidney failure is common to arise in very elderly cats, but a very uncommon thing to happen in young cats. In one phone call, my world fell apart. If anyone knows me, they know that my cats (my boys) are my world. They’ve always eaten and slept better than I have haha. Unfortunately, a car accident five years ago has left me struggling financially; however, I was blessed enough to be able to borrow over $6000 as an emergency loan from family; therefore, Goose was able to begin treatment right away with my vet, and was then transferred to the Internal Medicine Specialist for further treatment, prognosis and diagnosis. Goose was such a trooper! I was able to bring Goose home as he responded to treatment so well, my ALL * STAR. After seeing Goose respond so well to treatment, and a new treatment plan for palliative care at home, I was given the confidence of him being able to experience an ongoing, good quality of life for another few years, perhaps, rather than a terrifying few weeks. I was on top of the world and Goose seemed like he was too. When making the decision to go all in and ahead with the unexpected and shocking vet costs, unfortunately, I was unaware of the extent of the aggressive at home treatment costs that we would endure right after. Following treatment and diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease and kidney stones, Goose is now at home and following a new renal prescription diet, on three daily medications (Cerenia, Mirtazipine, Cobalequin), and beginning subcutaneous fluids once to twice a week (Plasmalyte, needles, syringes, butterfly catheters). We are also seeing the vet on a weekly, routine basis for blood check and Darbepoetin needle injection, which will hopefully become once every two weeks down the road, to once a month and then be able to be given at home instead like his other ongoing treatment. Currently, this aggressive treatment plan adds over $600-800 in extra cost a month. I now find myself in a terrible financial strain and predicament. I must look outside of my circle for financial help. My precious boy has responded so well with treatment, and I am reaching out to anyone who is not struggling financially, who is able to help us get through Goose’s new monthly vet costs. Any donation made will be going towards his medications and subcutaneous fluids/needles at home, and towards his weekly vet trips as mentioned above. I am swallowing my pride and reaching out to anyone who may be in a position to help with any type of donation, or just a share to help me spread his story so that Goose can live a happier and longer life. Please, if you are struggling financially at home as I am myself, do not feel pressured/the need to donate - a share to spread his story is just as much appreciated! Please help me, help Goose. If you have come this far, thank you for taking the time to read about Goose and his journey. If you are unable to donate, and/or are uncomfortable with sharing this post and have feline fur babies of your own, please look into Kidney Disease with felines/renal failure, and Urinary tract problems/blocked bladders. Yes, kidney failure with Chronic Kidney Disease is uncommon in young cats, but as Goose has enlightened me, please be aware that it is possible, as Goose is only 6.5 years old. Chronic Kidney Disease can be managed, especially if caught in the early stages. Thank you for your time, Kayla Paquette and Goose Goose.
