Hello! I’m Nathan Rivers, emerging writer/director currently attending InFocus Film School, and I’m here to seek help in order to bring our next project to life! Downwind follows Miles, a young kid with one goal: to make the perfect paper airplane. But when his Mom catches him using her work documents, she forbids him from ever making another one. As the distance between them grows larger, Miles moves ever closer to making his dreams come true. Every story I tell I make personal, so it was only a matter of time before telling a mother/son story. Often, especially at a young age, we focus so much on our differences that we’re oblivious to our shared unity. Our own personal pursuits taint the way we see the world, almost as if we’re in a constant state of tunnel vision. Miles is in this from the get go, stuck in a world of his own making. I find myself in this state now, even. So focused on schooling, life after school, *this project*, that I forget to slow down, and appreciate the people, experiences, and places around me right now. We only have one chance at living this life, so why not live it to the fullest. Why not appreciate what we have instead of trying to make it just that much better? Miles, and his Mom, feel similarly, and learn those very lessons throughout the course of the film. Now…how can you help us bring this to life? Every dollar raised on here will go directly into the production. We cannot stress this enough that any amount matters. We get it, times are tough, and you have to watch where your money goes. We want to assure you that your contributions help every single member of this team, not just make this movie the best it can be, but find our path forward in an ever shifting industry. You’re making our dreams come true, enabling us to go above and beyond what’s expected…and ultimately make this story everybody’s story. We have a few key financial considerations that your contributions will help alleviate: - location. Being a one location movie helps us tremendously, but this will still be a major cost. - Production design. We’d like to be able to decorate this whole house, and make it our own. Specifically, creating a kid’s bedroom from scratch, with papers and drawings filling every corner of the walls, excites us. - Food. Quite possibly the most important ingredient to the production pie. Without good food, people don’t work. We want GREAT food so everybody will give their all. - Cinematography. This entire film is in Miles’ perspective, and we want to see the world the way he does. We can do that through lenses that we have to rent elsewhere, as well as other pieces of equipment like dollies and jibs. - Transportation. A lot of student films don’t cover personal transportation to and from set. If our budget allows, as an extra thank you for their time, we want to pay for everybody’s gas/bus tickets/Ubers for cast and crew. - Composer. If our budget allows, we’d love to bring on a real composer to make music for the film. This would be wandering into uncharted territory for us, but one we think well worth exploring. - Festivals. We want to show this movie to the world! As a special thank you, every donor will get their name in the credits, regardless of amount, and a digital screener copy of the film when it’s complete. We’d also like to offer exclusive behind the scenes videos, which we’re still figuring out how to do. Thank you so much for your interest in making this dream a reality. Words cannot express my gratitude for you reading this much. It’s hard for me to ask for help, especially monetarily. I feel like I should find a way to make it work on my own. But, at the end of the day, filmmaking is the most collaborative art form there is. So why not extend an invitation to all of you? I for one can’t wait to welcome you into our ‘Downwind’ family.
