The Sauerkraut Triangle of North Dakota was the home of many, many Black Sea Germans. Kulm is in the heart of this area, situated at the corner of McIntosh, Logan, LaMoure, and Dickey counties. For all of the families in the area (Black Sea German, Swedish, Norwegian), the Kulm Messenger was a vital newspaper, publishing obits, news, homestead notifications, etc. Currently, historical issues of this paper are only available on microfilm at the State Historical Society of ND. Wouldn't it be great if you could research your family from the comfort of your own home by having the Kulm Messenger online? The goal of this fundraiser is to provide the State Historical Society of ND with the funds they need to digitize this newspaper and put it online at Advantage Archives (a free site). Once we raise the needed funding and send it to them, it will take at least 6 months for the newspaper to be digitized. (There's a faster option, but it's quite a bit more expensive.) If we raise more money than is needed, the excess will go to the Historical Society as a donation. If we blow the roof off our fundraising and really raise a lot, I'll talk to the archivist there about possibly digitizing another newspaper from that same 4-county area. This is a personal initiative by me (Carolyn Schott) because all of my family lived in the Kulm area so I know what a valuable resource this paper can be for family history researchers. Join me in putting this valuable resource online!
