As part of the UK's Black History Month in October 2024, the american vicarious has been invited to present our critically acclaimed production of DEBATE: Baldwin vs. Buckley at the prestigious Bristol Ideas Festival at the Bristol Old Vic and the historic Cambridge Union, where the original debate between James Baldwin and William F. Buckley Jr. took place. Recently, we had the honor of performing this work to sold-out audiences in London, and we are beyond excited at the prospect of returning to the UK. These invitations speak volumes about the profound impact of this production as a means to foster civil intellectual discourse, particularly in these divisive times. Needless to say, this opportunity is an enormous honor and we are now seeking your help in making it a reality. To ensure we can take this transformative performance to Bristol and Cambridge, we ask for your help to cover our travel expenses to the UK. Every contribution regardless of the amount, will significantly impact our journey and the success of this endeavor. Here is a breakdown of the travel expenses you can contribute towards or cover in full: Roundtrip airfares: $3,400 (4 roundtrip flights from NYC to London at $850 each) Hotels/Accommodations: $6,000 (6 artists for 8 days at $125/day) Ground transportation: $1,200 (rental minivan for 8 days) Per diems: $2,400 (6 artists for 8 days at $50/day) ABOUT THE PRODUCTION: DEBATE: Baldwin vs. Buckley is a live staging of the historic 1965 Cambridge Union debate between James Baldwin and William F. Buckley. “Is the American Dream at the expense of the American Negro?” This was the topic on February 18, 1965, when an overflow crowd packed the Cambridge Union in England to bear witness to a televised debate between Baldwin, the leading literary voice of the civil rights movement, and Buckley, a fierce critic of civil rights and America’s most influential conservative intellectual. The stage was set for an epic confrontation, with Baldwin advocating for a moral revolution in race relations while Buckley defended his unabashed elitism and commitment to the conservative movement he helped shape. This historic clash reveals the deep-rooted and lasting legacy of racial conflict that continues to haunt America. DEBATE: Baldwin vs. Buckley stars Teagle F. Bougere as Baldwin, Eric T. Miller in the role of Buckley, Tom Kiteley as Jeremy Burford, and Christopher Wareham as David Heycock. The production is directed by the american vicarious' Christopher McElroen.
