I'm John Spurlock, a Lancaster musician, educator, and part-time program administrator with MusiCorps. We work to ensure access to private instrument lessons for underrepresented, K-12 students in Lancaster City who wish to pursue music without the means to do so. I was excited when the program's founder, Kelly Buchanan, offered me a seat at the table this past January. I'm fortunate to know the joy that comes with learning an instrument and performing in our community. I saw MusiCorps as an opportunity to help extend that joy to student communities that I've worked with in school-based settings for the last 8 years. The social and emotional impacts of music education and performance are essential to the academic success of our students, especially for those grappling with complex trauma. Research shows that when children learn and perform music they gain crucial benefits to their cognitive development, relationship-building skills, and emotional regulation. We continue seeing such positive outcomes with our students, especially among refugee students who are thriving in the program. Building community alongside Lancaster schools, churches, and fellow benefit organizations helps us ensure that the students who need the most get the most that we have to offer. Right now we are seeking additional funds to admit all 11 applicants currently on our waiting list, including 4 more recently resettled refugee students. Here are examples of what your money can do for a single MusiCorps student: $30 = 1 private lesson $360 = 12 private lessons $1,400 = 48 private lessons (about 1 year's worth) Please consider donating today so that we can give more valuable learning opportunities to students as they start the new school year. We invite you to visit our website and blog to learn more about our programming and learning community. Thank you so much!
