Hi everyone! My name is Kelly and my best boy is Kygo! He is a 13-month-old full blooded Belgian Malinois who (to MY luck! ) was surrendered with the rest of his litter last summer to our local Humane Society because the 'breeders' realized within a few weeks of birth that they did not prepare sufficiently for two grown Mals, much less a litter of wild puppies. I had been searching for a service dog (a Mal!!!! ...Saw John Wick too many times LOL) for a while due to my own health journey. Through the past several years, I have been diagnosed, misdiagnosed, treated, and mistreated. It has not been an easy road. However, when seizures, memory loss, extreme social anxiety, and other neurological symptoms became a major issue, I knew it was time for a companion. A friend at the HS reached out and told me about the litter, and Cooper (my Beagle baby) and I immediately set off to meet 'Twister!' ...And what a Twister he was/IS! Although his name is now Kygo, (Ky for short) he is not short of energy, intelligence, drive, and love. The rest of his siblings went to police departments, but at 4 weeks, he was deemed "not aggressive enough." However, his instincts with me, his protective spirit, and his kind heart deem him a hero in my eyes every day. As you may know, Malinois are notorious for needing a 'job' or task. They need extensive exercise and are extremely motivated when given a mission. I have trained Ky myself until this point. He is fluent in German, Spanish, and English commands as well as hand signals. Although he is a service animal, the requirements for Louisiana Search And Rescue (LASAR) mandate that we would both need multiple advanced education and training, such as land navigation and survival, human and K9 field first-aid, gear, money for classes, training, transport, emergencies that may happen on the job, and supplies. This is a completely voluntary position that takes a handler and their animal anywhere from 1-3 years to complete certifications and training alone, as well as weekly meetings and club memberships which do include fees and are necessary to move forward into training. However, once completed, Ky and I will be able to help alongside Emergency services with a multitude of tasks, many that save lives, such as search and rescue. I would ask that you please consider helping us with a donation as we start our journey to help each other help others. Ky and I are so excited to see where we can go with YOUR help! THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS YOU!
