Hey Everyone, We ran into a very sad situation about 2 weeks ago where 4 seemingly standard vet visits to address Blue's refusal to eat and vomiting took a turn for the worse. After 5 days of no eating, even with appetite inducers, the vet suggested we take him to the emergency vet immediately. An ultrasound showed that there was a blockage in his stomach and small intestines and they said he would need emergency surgery. We got him in that night and they were able to remove the blockage by opening his stomach and repairing some of the small intestine that had been damaged by the foreign body. The surgeons told us his surgery went great and after a day he was sent home. The next night he ate a full meal and we thought he was on the mend for good. Unfortunately later that night we found a small bit of blood coming out of his incision. That felt like less of an issue when compared to his panting 8 hours straight and not laying down all night. When he finally laid down at 6 am he looked even worse than when he was panting so we went back to the emergency vet. They gave him pain meds and checked his vitals all day at the hospital while they tried to figure out what was happening to him. They told us he had an infection in the incision site and would need further surgery to clean up the wound. I couldn't believe he had to go back under a day and a half after his last surgery. We told them we of course wanted to go through with it and they were able to do an after-hours surgery to clean the wound. While in there, they found that his small intestine had been leaking into his abdominal cavity and that they would need to fully clean that out and remove part of his small intestine... It started to feel like he wasn't going to make it. We again told them, ok whatever you need to do to make him feel better, so they went to work. We were told the second surgery went a lot better and after 3 days in the hospital while the wound vacs did their job he is now at home resting. We hope that this is the end of his suffering and that he can get back to his normal, active life ASAP. He is currently only eating very special meals (cooked chicken, cheese (LOVES CHEESE), and sometimes some blueberries) and is on antibiotics to help with the infection. His demeanor is much better than right after his first surgery, which makes us hopeful. Throughout the whole process, the vet would call me to confirm that I wanted to keep treating Blue even though the bills came in in numbers like $3500, $6000, and $11,500. There was no hesitation even though those numbers seemed insane to me for them to help my dog. The only goal on my mind for the last 2 weeks has been to make Blue feel better. Now we feel fortunate to have our dog back home healing, even if it comes with what feels like an insurmountable bill. We are not expecting anything from anyone, but we wanted to set up a place where people could help if they wanted. If you cannot, no worries at all, but please send some good vibes Blue's way (even just in thought) so that he can bounce back quickly. Love you all. You're my boy Blue, Taylor & Lauren
