Hi, meet Barney! This little lad has been abused, neglected, untreated for far too long. He's now been rescued and we need community help for him. Our vets have been amazing! They have done a full health check and taken x-rays. Beautiful Barney here is suffering with chronic arthritis and pain from severe untreated wing fractures from his previous life. He's with volunteer animal carers now and we know he can have a great life if his pain is resolved. He's a beautiful boy and we think he deserves a second chance without the painful wing and we want to give him this opportunity. Without surgery, we will have to make a hard decision to end his suffering another way which we want to avoid if possible. Barney's heartbreaking story: Barney was one of a group of pet galahs reported to RSPCA earlier this year. The galahs were living in small cages on the ground of a garage that doubled as a backyard hair salon. The cages were filthy, clearly hadn't been cleaned for a long time and the birds were all in varying states of injury and neglect. The confinement and chemicals used in the hair salon resulted in pressure sores, skin irritation and stiff joints from inability to stretch their limbs. These are the cages Barney and his friends were living in: We were shocked to find the state of neglect all these galahs were in. There was a thick layer of mouldy seed and faecal matter in the cages, and no fresh water. The cages were so small the birds couldn't stretch their wings. Initially, the galahs received a health exam, treatment and were placed in ICUs to decompress. Eventually, once their skin issues cleared up, they were moved outside to large aviaries with sunshine, rain, enrichment and plenty of healthy food. Above: this is Barney in his ICU, decompressing after a stressful day being rescued and health checked. He looked so confused. You can see the hanging, painful wing clearly. It was evident that this boy had multiple traumatic injuries to the wing that were not vet assessed or previously treated, poor boy. Barney is now in care with a volunteer. He's had a little setback with his health and some weightloss. X-rays show arthritis in his old fracture sites and he seems extra painful in the cold weather. We have made the decision to get him healthy and then have our amazing avian vets perform surgery to remove the sore wing. Once his sore wing is removed we expect him to be a happy, comfortable boy. Please help if you can buy donating towards his vet bills. We are only asking for money to cover his surgery. All other vet work was covered by us. Thank you!
