Walking in my Baltimore neighborhood, I fell in love with stained-glass windows in houses, churches and public buildings. Two years of research and hundreds of photographs later, I'm self-publishing an illustrated book on the social history of stained glass in Baltimore for architects, historians, students, planners, scholars, artists, decorative-arts aficionados, and holiday gift-givers. The book will link the evolution of this decorative art form to the reality of racial, ethnic and religious segregation and discrimination in the city. I plan to launch the book in November, in conjunction with an exhibition of local stained-glass artists' work at The Peale Museum in Baltimore. A talented team, consisting of a MICA photography student, a MICA book-design student, an editor, a publicist and a printer, is helping me bring the project to fruition. The Maryland State Arts Council is providing partial support for the project, but I'm seeking about half the needed funding, to pay costs of my team, book production, promotion and distribution costs, and the exhibition. Your contribution will help me publish the first illustrated book on art glass in Baltimore and promote the venerable and endangered craft of stained-glass making, which has added so much beauty and value to the city's built environment.
