Hello everyone! My name is Patrick Riviere and I am working on my second documentary short film. Thanks to SO many of you, my first film made it out into the world and was honored with FIVE Best Documentary Short Awards from coast to coast along with several other awards and was selected to be part of the permanent archives at New York City's Library for The Performing Arts (TOFT). My next film is a larger undertaking and the budget is almost five times what my first film was. THE GOOD NEWS... we've raised over two-thirds of the budget with three small grants from Shawna E. Shea Memorial Foundation, Provincetown Cultural Council and The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod. In addition, a Producer and five Associate Producers have come on board as financial backers. We then expected we'd still need to raise about 10K but because we have decided to utilize most of the equipment we already have and our Cinematographer has decided to work for us pro-bono, we are now looking to raise $6000 to GREEN LIGHT this amazing film. So... what is the film about... Artists at the Edge is a short documentary film that will rely on personal accounts and created art to share the story of my two artists: Kenny Lockwood and Darlene Van Alstyne. The "interviews" will be filmed in a variety of locations in Provincetown, Cape Cod: art studios, the dunes, living spaces, public streets, etc. The ultimate goal is to create a film that follows and interweaves the lives and creative work of two very different artists whose lives intersect because they are both living year-round at the edge of the world at the tip of Cape Cod and are both seen by many in this current political and social climate as "other." The film will explore their work, their experiences, their challenges and their successes. It is also important for me that the actual people who have lived these lives and created this art are the ones telling their own stories in their own voices. The location is also important to the story as Provincetown for many decades has been seen as a safe harbor for artists (especially those on the fringe) and the LGBTQ+ community to express themselves freely without risk of danger for the most part. While judgments and criticisms are unavoidable, Provincetown has shown itself to be one of the most tolerant areas of the country for those who identify as "other." Forms of expression such as "drag," "sexual art," "provocative storytelling" and "activist creativity" are all embraced and celebrated here. The town itself hosts several renowned festivals: The Provincetown International Film Festival, The Tennessee Williams Festival, Cabaret Fest and one of the largest 12-step Retreats (especially for LGBTQ+) in the country. The only "unknowns" for the film is what my two artists will ultimately share with me and the extent to which they will open up about a variety of subjects I will broach with them. However, I have carefully chosen these individuals because of their personalities, their art, their experiences and their ability to communicate thoughts and experiences that will be inspiring, poignant and joyful for an audience. I look forward to being their guide as they reveal their stories on camera. I use the word "guide" very deliberately as I believe my role is more of a friendly therapist who asks the right questions in the right way to facilitate the most honest and intriguing answers I can so that the film is not just a series of interview questions or narrative clips with visual aids but a journey and experience that viewers can both relate to and be altered by. And... where is your money going? Over 80% of our budget will be spent in "POST". So that includes all the editing: main footage editing, sound editing, color correction, etc and then we have expenses like securing a DCP file and closed captioning which many of the festivals require, and finally archive and usage fees, and film festival submission fees. We've cut some of our budget by deciding to primarily use the equipment we already have; cutting out travel expenses to festivals and having our Cinematographer agree to work pro-bono! We are grateful! Thank you for supporting art and most importantly for supporting my art! It means everything to me. Your generosity is part of the creation and I am so grateful! I can’t wait to share this film with you! One last thing... if you donate $500 dollars or more you will be given an "Assistant Producer" credit on the film and on IMDB.
