This fundraiser is being established to help an incredible young woman Anshu Adhikari from Nepal continue her journey toward graduation from the University of Mary Washington. When she arrived here two years ago, she was following her dream, as well as that of her late father, to be the first female in her family to earn a college degree, a computer science degree no less. Due to her father’s untimely death from COVID, her finances when she arrived were not adequate to cover her university expenses. Due to an outpouring of support from our wonderful community, UMW and some very generous people, she has been able to pay her tuition and have housing for two years. As the next two school years are about to begin, she once again will require assistance with her living expenses. We hope this fundraiser will help get her to graduation and the degree she so desires. She has had and overcome a great deal of hardship and her determination is evident to all who have had the honor of meeting or knowing her. Here is a little view of her journey in her own words two years ago when she arrived: “I am Anshu Adhikari, a 1st-year student at the University of Mary Washington, and an aspiring data scientist, from Nepal. I would be immensely grateful for your help in raising funds for my living expenses. Due to COVID, my family lost our only breadwinner. Unfortunately, in November 2024, before I came to UMW, my father, Suresh Prasad Yadav, Lead Engineer at MCA-Nepal, passed away due to COVID-related complications. The next day I had to appear for my final high school exams. As I was deeply grieving, I was determined to go to college. It was my father’s wish that I go to college as no other woman in my family had the opportunity to do so before. Now I am also committed to financially supporting my mother and 8-year-old brother after I graduate from college. I am very thankful for the amazing opportunity to go to the University of Mary Washington. With the support from UMW and the community, I was able to complete my first semester. In just the last few months, I have found a community of friends, professors, and mentors who are like my family here in Fredericksburg. I also have an on-campus job which is a big help. I continue to apply for additional scholarships and find ways to lower my cost further. I believe that continuing my education at UMW will be instrumental in my personal and professional growth. I would be grateful for your support in helping me close my financial gap and succeed at the University of Mary Washington.” We again have the opportunity to make a difference in Anshu’s life. With all of our help, whether large or small, your donations will allow her to reach her goal. I have no doubt that she will use the knowledge she receives from UMW to make a difference in the world of computer science and also for the women of Nepal. You can help in either of two ways or both, by giving a donation of any size that would be so very much appreciated or if you can’t by passing this link forward to others you know who may be able to help. I am so grateful and thankful for your interest and support. ... This fundraising campaign is being managed by Ann Zeitz, a Fredericksburg resident whose family has gotten to know and love Anshu.
