Hi, my name is Jade. I’m 25 years old, a full-time student and worker, and most importantly, a single mom to an 8-month-old baby boy. On Christmas, my life changed in an instant when I was in a terrible car accident. My car was totaled, and I suffered serious injuries, including: • A broken right leg in three places, requiring two surgeries and the placement of rods, plates, and pins. • Injuries to both of my knees. • Significant bruising on my lungs and a lacerated liver. • Facial injuries from the airbag, including loose bottom teeth and a burn on my forehead. • A concussion and loss of consciousness from the impact. The days after the accident were a blur of pain and fear. My health declined rapidly post-surgery. I ran constant fevers, my oxygen and blood levels dropped significantly (requiring a blood transfusion), and my blood pressure and heart rate have remained dangerously high. Throughout all of this, the thought of my son kept me going. I’m determined to recover for him, but the road ahead is long. I’ve been told it will take months before I can return to work, and unfortunately, I don’t qualify for paid medical leave as my one-year work anniversary isn’t until March. I’m now facing mounting medical bills, home expenses, and the costs of caring for my son during this time. As someone who has always worked hard and rarely asked for help, it’s humbling to write this. But I truly can’t do this alone.
