Greetings, my name is Mitchelle, auntie of David Johnson. David is a bright, compassionate, dedicated, and energetic 16-year-old-boy. He is in 11th grade at Titchfield High School in Portland, Jamaica. David is an active Corporal of his school cadet team. On Tuesday, May 14th, (on his way home from school) David was involved in a devastating motor vehicle accident that resulted in the death of two other schoolmates and significant head injuries to others. The vehicle he was travelig in had lost control which lead to a head-on-collision with a parked construction truck. The impact was so severe that he required immediate surgery to save his life. As I write, David remains in critical condition at the Kingston Public Hospital. There, his team performed a life-saving surgery craniotomy to alleviate his subdural hematoma. Thanks to the incredible efforts of the medical team, David survived the craniotomy operation, but his journey to recovery is far from over. A second surgery, a cranioplasty, is now needed to repair the part of his skull that was removed to allow his brain to heal. He currently has a tracheostomy tube for breathing and an NG tube for feeding. David has since suffered from two strokes which resulted in a lack of sensation to the right side of his body. His Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) reading is 4T meaning that he is completely unresponsive despite opening his eyes on May 24th, 2024. David was in a coma for a total of eight days. He is awake now, but he's not responding to stimuli. His eyes are open but they are unable to track movements; we are not sure of any damage to his visual fields. David now faces a long and challenging road ahead, requiring extensive treatment and therapy. His recovery will involve: • Ongoing medical care: David will need regular visits to specialists, and constant monitoring of his condition and possibly additional surgery. • Rehabilitation therapy: To regain his cognitive and physical abilities, he will require intensive physical, occupational, vision and speech therapy. Our family is seeking assistance to afford the rehabilitation cost which will amount up to 1 million Jamaican dollars per month for all his rehabilitation needs.
