Hello friends, we are writing to request support from you all. For 10 years, our dear friend, neighbor, and compañero in the struggle, Crispín, has fought for our communities. He worked in the field, in the dairy industry, which produces the milk that we drink every day and he has also worked in construction. During his free time, he worked with our communities, organizing farmworkers and teaching them to make their rights into reality. Shortly after joining the Workers Center of CNY as a volunteer, he took on the responsibility of working full time for the organization. He was the primary farmworker plaintiff suing New York State and ex-governor Andrew Cuomo for the right of farmworkers to organize and engage in collective bargaining. Thanks to Crispín’s efforts, that lawsuit was won in May 2019 and the decision in favor of farmworkers’ rights pushed forward a law that had been pending for over 20 years. Now, farmworkers have a law that backs them, which is called the Farm Laborers Fair Practices Act.
Crispín is an essential part of our communities. He inspires many and is a model of how to be present and active in movements and campaigns for the rights of all members of our communities, especially the most marginalized.
A few months ago, Crispín made the difficult but necessary decision to return to Mexico to be with his family. For many months, he has been living with a very difficult health situation, suffering constant migraines. Many medical appointments, tests, and treatment options did not succeed in resolving his pain, and in conversation with friends and colleagues, he decided to return to Mexico to be with his family, rest, and heal. He had not seen his family since he was 17 - over 10 years ago.
Now Crispín needs our help. His medical treatment in New York was very expensive, and he continues needing treatments with mental health specialists to help address the results of living for so long under so much stress and trauma. All of this has associated expenses, as well as transportation from the village where he lives with his family to cities where these services are available.
Also, Crispín needs–and deserves, as we all deserve–to rest. These funds will help him take time to rest and recover as fully as possible. Crispín said to me, “What I really want now is to heal.”
We already miss our dear friend and compañero. But we know that this is the best decision that he could have taken and we want to support him in any way possible. Hola a todxs quiero pedirles el apoyo de todes. Por 10 años, nuestro querido amigo, vecino y compañero en la lucha, Crispín, ha luchado por nuestras comunidades. También él trabajó en el campo en específico en la industria lechera donde proviene la leche en la que consumimos todos los días y también trabajó en la construcción. Su tiempo libre trabajaba con nuestras comunidades organizando a los trabajadores agrícolas y enseñándoles a hacer realidad sus derechos, poco tiempo después de ser voluntario con el centro de trabajadores él tomó la responsabilidad de trabajar tiempo completo con la organización. Crispin fue el trabajador agrícola demandante principal en la corte suprema demandando al estado de Nueva York y al ex gobernador Andrew Cuomo el derecho de los trabajadores agrícolas a organizarse y a la negociación colectiva, gracias al esfuerzo de Crispín ganamos en la corte en Mayo 2019 y la decisión de la corte a favor de los trabajadores del campo empujó una legislación que llevaba más de 20 años que ahora los trabajadores del campo ya tienen una ley que lo respalda que conocemos hoy como La Ley de Prácticas Justas para los Trabajadores Agrícolas. Crispin forma una parte esencial de nuestras comunidades. Nos inspira a muchos y es un modelo de cómo ser presentes y partícipes en movimientos y campañas a favor de los derechos de todos los miembros de nuestras comunidades, especialmente los más marginados.
Hace unos meses, Críspin ha tomado la difícil pero necesaria decisión de regresar a México con su familia. Durante varios meses, ha vivido una situación de salud muy difícil, sufriendo migrañas constantes. Varias citas médicas con estudios y tratamientos no lograron resolver su dolor, y en conversación con amigos y colegas, decidió volver a México para poder estar con su familia, descansar y sanar. No había visto a su familia por más de 10 años, desde que tenía 17 años.
Ahora Crispín necesita nuestra ayuda. Su tratamiento médico en NY requirió de muchos recursos. Así mismo él sigue requiriendo tratamientos con especialistas con su salud mental para ayudar a abordar lo que resulta de vivir tanto tiempo bajo mucho estrés e incluso trauma. Todo esto implica gastos médicos y de transporte del pueblo donde vive con su familia a ciudades donde se disponen de estos servicios. Además, Crispín necesita–y merece, como todes lo merecemos–descansar. Estos fondos le ayudarán a tomar el tiempo para descansar y recuperarse lo más completamente que se pueda. Crispín me dijo, “Lo que realmente quiero ahora es sanar.”
Ya extrañamos a nuestro querido amigo y compañero. Pero sabemos que esta es la mejor decisión que pudiera tomar y lo queremos apoyar en cualquier manera posible.
