I hope everyone is doing well and is in good health!
I wanted to reach out to you as Moises and I are facing a difficult and challenging year. I lost my job in January and have been utilizing each day to find work. As I am currently experiencing disabilities, I will not be able to get a job where I need to drive or walk (even a small distance), lift or do anything physical. This eliminates most positions that I can apply for unless they are remote positions. I rely heavily on my husband to help me wash, dress, make dinner, do dishes, laundry, and help me with my leg dressings and cream for my ulcers (I have severe diabetic neuropathy and constant leg/foot pain). He also checks my legs/feet each night for cuts/bruises – which is critical for diabetic patients. I rely on wheelchairs and scooters to move around in larger areas. Having Type 2 Diabetes (Insulin dependent with complications) can be debilitating, but I am working closely with my doctor to monitor my conditions. Due to these complications, I have also applied for disability, which was denied last month. I am working to appeal this decision which will take many months.
Moises is also experiencing medical difficulties at this time. In the past few years, he was hospitalized several times due to severe blood loss/anemia, which was happening due to his ulcers and use of multiple blood thinners. He has had major surgery to remove these ulcers and received 5 blood transfusions. He is doing better, but his blood levels are still not normalized. His Hematologist provides Moises the necessary Iron infusions every 4-6 months to stabilize his blood as the doctors are trying to help his body produce the hemoglobin on its own. Prior to this, Moises had suffered a stroke and needed lifesaving medications and treatment. He was treated by Capital Health Systems in Trenton, NJ. More recently, Moises was diagnosed with kidney disease and requires medication and treatment as well.
Why we are doing a go-fund-me page:
Due to the difficulties in finding a remote position while being incapacitated, filing for disability and bankruptcy, we have limited money to pay our rent, medical bills and other monthly expenses. Our funds will soon be depleted, and we will have no money or place to stay. My current cost for Cobra medical insurance is just under $1,000/month and our rent is $2,100/month. If I am unable to continue this coverage, I will need to pay $8,000-$10,000 per month for my Diabetic medications alone which includes the cost of Insulin. I have explored other medical insurances; however, premiums/prescription costs will go up.
Sadly, we had to sell many of our personal valuables, such as jewelry, clothing, and furniture. We will be selling our cars next. Bills that we cannot negotiate are rent, medical bills and car insurance. I have been proactive in calling our cable, phone, creditors, insurance and other accounts to assist us in stretching out our bills over time in order to have smaller monthly payments. In addition, there are the everyday expenses such as groceries, maintenance, gas and unexpected expenses we need to pay.
We all go through ups and downs in life, and I strongly believe that God carries us through to the next window. This has given us strength!
For those of you who know me well, I have always tried to be generous throughout my life because I feel it is the right thing to do and it will come full circle/pay it forward. I have donated to organizations, charities and to others who are having a difficult time of their own. Even when I don’t have enough for myself, I will always give to the next person in need. Even a little gesture can make someone’s heart warm! I have seen this!
If you can give as little as you can, we will be forever grateful, and this will help me and Moises tremendously. As always, we are so fortunate to have such wonderful and supportive network of friends!
I would like to provide some information on the signs of a stroke:
5 Warning Signs of Stroke:
• Sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm or leg (especially on one side of the body).
• Sudden confusion or trouble speaking or understanding speech (this was what was happening with Moises - he was confused, smiling, laughing and unresponsive).
• Sudden vision problems in one or both eyes.
• Sudden difficulty walking or dizziness, loss of balance or problems with coordination.
• Severe headache with no known cause.
You can have a “silent” stroke, or one you're completely unaware of, or can't remember. In fact, silent strokes usually display no symptoms at all. Like ischemic strokes, silent strokes will occur when the blood supply to a part of your brain is suddenly cut off, depriving your brain of oxygen and damaging brain cells.
